How to watch Plex in a Tesla

Plex serves your personal media library plus its free ad-supported channels through the browser. Handy for road-trip downloads you already own.

Launch Plex Browser route

Good to know: Browser only. A Plex server or the free channels is required.

Step by step

  1. Park the car

Streaming only runs in Park. Shift into Park and keep the car awake, a charging stop is the ideal moment.

  2. Open BigScrn in the car browser

Open the in-car web browser and go to bigscrn.com. Bookmark it so it is one tap away next time.

  3. Tap Go full screen

On the launcher, tap Go full screen. BigScrn bounces the browser through YouTube, the one site Tesla opens full screen. Tap "Go to site" when it appears and you land back full screen, and the browser stays that way.

  4. Launch Plex

Tap Launch on Plex. It opens full screen, no account required.

  5. Press play

Start a title. It fills the display and audio plays through the car speakers.

Questions

Does Plex work in a Tesla?

Yes. Plex runs in the Tesla browser while the car is parked. There is no built-in Tesla app, so the browser is the way in.

Do I need a Plex subscription?

Plex is free, though it may ask you to create a free account. No paid subscription is required.

Can I watch Plex while driving?

No. Streaming only works in Park, and you should never watch video while the car is moving. BigScrn is for passengers and parked, charging cars.

Where does the Plex audio play?

Through the car speakers. Set the volume on the steering-wheel scroll or the on-screen control as you would for music.

Is BigScrn part of Plex?

No. BigScrn is an independent launcher and setup guide. It is not affiliated with Plex, Tesla, or any streaming service.
